What to Expect in a Nutrition Session?
Starting nutrition counseling can feel intimidating, especially if you're not sure what to expect. One of the most common questions we hear at TLB Nutrition Therapy is, "What will we actually do during a session?" The answer is simple: it depends on you.
At TLB, we often compare nutrition counseling to building a house. Just like you wouldn't start with the roof, healing your relationship with food happens one step at a time. Each phase builds on the one before it, and everyone's journey looks a little different.
We begin by creating a strong foundation through consistent nourishment, balanced meals, and meeting your body's basic nutritional needs. From there, we begin building the framing and walls by exploring food rules, challenging diet culture beliefs, and understanding your relationship with food, body, and movement.
As you continue to grow, we begin adding the decorations—introducing more food variety, flexibility, joyful movement, and reconnecting with the satisfaction of eating. Finally, we work toward building the roof: a place of body trust, food freedom, and a peaceful relationship with food that feels sustainable for your life.
One of the most important things to remember is that recovery is not linear. You may revisit different phases throughout your journey, and that's completely normal. Nutrition counseling isn't about perfection—it's about developing the skills, confidence, and support you need to build a life that feels nourishing, safe, and authentic to you.
If you're considering working with a dietitian, know that every session is individualized. Your pace, goals, and lived experiences guide the process, and our role is to walk alongside you every step of the way.
